Annotated Bibliography

Mary addresses how schools are able to avoid the "seperation of church and state" issue which has become a very touchy subject when introducing yoga into public schools. There are quotations from teachers who are involved in these programs and ways that they teach yoga without spirituality.

Linda uses basic knowledge of the definition, purpose, description, and research and general acceptance of meditation. This gave me a basis for defining key terms and giving background information of meditation regarding history and research of meditation.

This article defines and gives basic knowledge and understanding of learning disorders. This was the basis for the beginning of my research to give readers a better understanding of defining key terms. 


Hickey, Wakoh Shannon. "Meditation as medicine: a critique." Cross Currents June 2010: 168+. General OneFile. Web. 26 Mar. 2012.

Hickey used research and knowledge of meditation to give an alternate view of meditation when using it as a source of medication. This was the basis for my argument that meditation should not be used or introduced as a viable source for change.


Micucci, Dana. “International Education: Meditation helps students.” The New York Times. 15 Feb. 2012. Web. 26 Mar. 2012.

The New York Times published this article proving that studies were conducted on transcendental meditation. The study showed that there was significant improvement in areas of attitudes, behaviors, and performance.


Miller, Elliot. “The Yoga Boom: A Call for Christian Discernment Part 3: Toward a Comprehensive Christian Response.” Christian Research Journal. Vol. 31 Num 4, 2008. Christian Research Institute. Web. 22 Apr. 2012.

Miller introduced an argument that yoga is religious and violates separation of church and state. This was used as an argument to remove yoga from schools as a violation of rights. This was a critique based on Christian views.

This article addresses the case that removed a moment of silence or voluntary prayer from school that went before the Supreme Court. This was used as my argument that yoga should not be introduced into schools and that it violates our rights as stated under the First and Fourteenth Amendments.

The David Lynch Foundation published this article that shows that transcendental meditation proves to be beneficial through research studies. There are specific schools and data results from these studies.

Morning Edition broadcasted an episode on neurofeedback as an alternate treatment for ADHD. This was introduced into my research as an argument for different treatments.

WebMD has an entire site dedicated to ADHD. This information was used for the purpose of alternative treatments for ADHD to soothe symptoms. The site allowed me to gain more knowledge of basic dietary information to reduce ADHD in children.

The Associated Press published this article to show the controversy that has been raised from introducing yoga into public schools. It also details how yoga helps children and what yoga is used as in schools.


Zieman, Gayle. "Attention deficit/hyperactivity disorder (ADHD)." Clinical Reference Systems. Vol. 2010. McKesson Health Solutions LLC, 2010. Health Reference Center Academic. Web. 26 Mar. 2012.

Zieman introduces the ADD/ADHD which gave me a better understanding for the disorder. Much of the information from this article was used to define key terms and give a better understanding of the disorder. It also helped tie in key information for my argument that meditation is beneficial for children.
